GED® Math Word Problems: A 4-Step Method That Works

GED® math word problems trip up strong students. Learn the four-step method the GED® Math course teaches: translate, model, solve, and check.

Word problems are usually where GED® Mathematical Reasoning scores fall apart, and it's rarely because the math itself is too hard. A student who can solve "3x + 7 = 22" without blinking will freeze on "A rental company charges $22 plus $3 per hour. How many hours can you rent for $40?" The math is identical. What changes is that you have to build the equation yourself before you can solve it.

The fix is a repeatable process, not more practice problems thrown at the wall. Four steps: translate, model, solve, check.

Step 1: Translate the words into math

Before you calculate anything, turn the sentence into symbols. Go phrase by phrase rather than trying to hold the whole problem in your head at once.

  • "per," "each," and "a" usually mean multiplication (e.g. "$3 per hour" becomes 3h).
  • "more than," "increased by," and "total" usually mean addition.
  • "less than" and "decreased by" usually mean subtraction, but watch the order: "5 less than x" is x minus 5, not 5 minus x.
  • "is," "was," and "gives" almost always mean the equals sign.
  • A question asking "how many" or "what value" is telling you what your variable represents.

Write down what the variable stands for before you go further. "Let h = number of hours rented" takes five seconds and prevents you from answering the wrong question later.

Step 2: Model it as an equation

Once the phrases are translated, assemble them into one equation or inequality. For the rental example: total cost = 22 + 3h. If the question asks how many hours you can rent for a total of $40, the model becomes 22 + 3h = 40.

This is the step students skip when they're in a hurry, jumping straight from the words to a guess at the answer. Skipping it is exactly what causes careless errors, because there's nothing written down to check your work against later.

Step 3: Solve

Now it's ordinary algebra: isolate the variable using inverse operations. 22 + 3h = 40 becomes 3h = 18, then h = 6. This is the part most GED® students are already comfortable with, which is exactly why the first two steps matter: they get you to a clean equation you already know how to solve.

Step 4: Check the answer against the original question

This step gets skipped more than any other, and it's the one that catches the most mistakes. Two things to check:

  • Does the number make sense in context? Six hours of rental is reasonable; negative six hours or six thousand hours should make you suspect an error upstream.
  • Did you answer the actual question asked? Some GED® word problems ask for a related but different value than the one you just solved for, such as the total cost rather than the number of hours, or the difference between two amounts rather than either amount alone.

Plug h = 6 back into 22 + 3(6) and confirm it equals 40. If it does, you're done. If it doesn't, the error is almost always in the translation or the model, not the algebra, so that's where to look first.

A worked example

"A phone plan costs $15 per month plus $0.10 per text message beyond the first 500 free texts. If a customer's bill was $19, how many texts beyond the free 500 did they send?"

  • Translate: 15 = base cost, 0.10 = cost per extra text, t = number of texts beyond 500, 19 = total.
  • Model: 15 + 0.10t = 19
  • Solve: 0.10t = 4, so t = 40
  • Check: 15 + 0.10(40) = 15 + 4 = 19. Correct, and 40 extra texts is a reasonable number, not an obvious error.

Common mistakes worth watching for

  • Misreading "less than" and reversing the subtraction order.
  • Solving for the variable but not converting back to what the question actually asked (for example, solving for hours when the question asked for total cost).
  • Skipping the check step under time pressure, which is exactly when arithmetic slips happen.
  • Forgetting units, especially on GED® questions involving rates, money, or measurement conversions.

Practice this deliberately

Translate-model-solve-check only becomes fast with repetition on problems that force you to build the equation yourself, not just plug numbers into a formula you're handed.
