How to Ace GED® Science Passages: READ-CHOOSE-CHECK

You don't need a science background to pass the GED® Science test. Here's the READ-CHOOSE-CHECK method for working through any science passage.

A common fear among GED® students is that the Science test requires memorizing facts from a biology or chemistry textbook. It doesn't, not primarily. Most GED® Science questions hand you a passage, a graph, a table, or a description of an experiment, and ask you to reason through it using information that's sitting right there on the screen. The test is measuring whether you can read and interpret scientific information, not whether you already know it.

That's good news, because reading and interpreting is a skill you can systematize. The approach is three steps: read, choose, check.

Read: work the passage before you touch the question

Read the passage or data set first, in full, before looking at the answer choices. Skimming straight to the question and scanning for keywords feels faster, but it usually costs more time overall because you end up rereading the passage two or three times to track down details you skipped past.

While you read, pay attention to:

  • What is actually being measured or observed, and in what units.
  • Whether the passage describes an experiment: what's the variable being changed, what's being held constant, and what's the outcome being measured.
  • Any trend in a graph or table (increasing, decreasing, no clear pattern) before you look at specific numbers.
  • Definitions given in the text itself. GED® Science passages usually define any specialized term you need, so you're not expected to know it beforehand.

Choose: eliminate before you select

Once you understand the passage, read the question carefully and eliminate answer choices that are clearly wrong before picking the one that seems right. Most GED® Science wrong answers fall into a few predictable traps:

  • Answers that are true in general but not supported by this specific passage or data.
  • Answers that reverse a relationship shown in the passage (claiming a variable increases when the data shows it decreases).
  • Answers that are only partially correct, true for one part of a multi-part claim but not the whole statement.
  • Extreme or absolute answers ("always," "never," "all") when the passage only supports a limited or conditional claim.

Eliminating two obviously wrong choices before comparing the remaining two turns a four-way guess into a much more manageable decision.

Check: confirm against the passage, not your memory

Before locking in an answer, point back to the specific sentence, data point, or graph feature that supports it. If you can't point to something in the passage that justifies the answer, that's a signal to look again rather than trust a gut feeling, especially on questions that sound like they're testing outside science knowledge. A quick example

Suppose a passage describes an experiment where two groups of plants receive different amounts of sunlight, and a graph shows the group with more sunlight grew taller over four weeks.

  • Read: the variable being changed is sunlight exposure; the outcome measured is plant height over time; the trend is more sunlight correlates with more growth in this experiment.
  • Choose: an answer choice claiming "sunlight has no effect on plant growth" can be eliminated immediately, since it contradicts the graph. An answer claiming "all plants require direct sunlight to survive" can also be eliminated, since the passage only supports a claim about growth rate, not survival.
  • Check: the remaining answer, something like "in this experiment, more sunlight was associated with greater plant height," is directly supported by the graph described, so it holds up.

Where the numbers come in

A minority of GED® Science questions do require calculation: finding an average, reading a rate off a graph, or working out a percent change. A calculator is available for these, but the reading-and-reasoning skill above still comes first, since you need to correctly identify which numbers from the passage the question is even asking you to use before you calculate anything.
