Course Syllabus
Course Structure
This focused SAT® Math course contains 12 sessions organized into four stages.
Stage 1: Foundations and Core Algebra
- What a Nonlinear System Means — Identify nonlinear relationships, interpret intersections, and distinguish nonlinear systems from linear systems.
- Substitution into a Quadratic — Turn a two-equation system into one quadratic and recover complete ordered-pair solutions.
- Factoring, the Quadratic Formula, and the Discriminant — Select an efficient solving method and determine the number of real solutions.
Stage 2: Structure and Solution Counts
- Using Structure and Symmetry — Use squares, symmetry, and special forms to solve efficiently without unnecessary expansion.
- Parameter Questions and Tangency — Find parameter values that produce zero, one, or two real intersections.
- Modeling and Context — Build nonlinear systems from projectile, area, revenue, and other SAT®-style situations and reject invalid contextual roots.
Stage 3: Broader Nonlinear Relationships
- Lines and Circles — Substitute a linear equation into a circle equation and interpret secant, tangent, and non-intersection cases.
- Two Nonlinear Equations — Use elimination, substitution, and symmetry when both equations contain nonlinear terms.
- Radical and Rational Systems — Respect domains, excluded values, and extraneous solutions when radicals or denominators appear.
Stage 4: Interpretation and SAT® Mastery
- Reading Graphs and Intersections — Connect algebraic roots to intersection coordinates, function values, and graphical behavior.
- Digital SAT® Strategy and Desmos Verification — Choose between algebra, graphing, tables, and answer-choice testing while using technology as a check.
- Mixed Mastery Review — Solve a cumulative set of nonlinear-system problems and apply a repeatable test-day decision process.
Recommended Study Routine
Complete the sessions in order. For each session, study the worked examples, complete the embedded knowledge check, solve the related practice questions without notes, and review every explanation. Keep an error log organized by setup, algebra, solution count, and context errors.
Session Assessment
Every session includes 15 Level 3 MCQs linked directly to that lesson. The questions emphasize multi-step reasoning, exact algebra, parameter conditions, interpretation, and method selection. Complete all 15 after studying the session, then use the worked explanations to correct both algebra errors and strategy errors. The course also retains a separate cumulative question bank for mixed review.
Course Outcomes
By the End of This Course, You Will Be Able To
- Recognize a nonlinear system and explain why its solutions are intersection points shared by both equations.
- Rewrite and substitute equations to reduce a two-variable nonlinear system to a one-variable equation.
- Solve the resulting quadratic by factoring, completing the square, or the quadratic formula.
- Use the discriminant to determine whether a line and a quadratic have zero, one, or two real intersections.
- Recover complete ordered pairs and verify every candidate in both original equations.
- Use symmetry and special structures such as (x^2=a), circles, and difference-of-squares forms efficiently.
- Determine parameter values that make a line tangent to, intersect, or miss a parabola or circle.
- Solve selected systems in which both equations are nonlinear by using substitution or elimination strategically.
- Enforce domain restrictions in radical and rational systems and reject extraneous or undefined solutions.
- Translate SAT®-style word problems into nonlinear systems and interpret roots in context.
- Read graphical intersections and connect them to equations, coordinates, and numbers of solutions.
- Choose efficiently among algebra, Desmos graphing, tables, and answer-choice testing on the digital SAT®.
- Explain common errors, including losing a negative root, reporting only an (x)-value, and accepting a solution that fails an original equation.
- Complete mixed SAT®-style nonlinear-system questions with improved accuracy, reasoning, and time management.
