The language items test grammar and style at the very top of the range:
- Faulty comparisons -- 'more original than any OTHER writer'; compare like with like.
- The subjunctive -- 'recommend that he be present,' 'insist that it be done.'
- Inverted agreement -- find the true subject when it follows the verb ('Beneath the floor was a box').
- Conditional-perfect mood -- 'If they had left earlier, they would have caught the train.'
- Complex who/whom and precise diction -- the exact word, with nothing wasted.
The Extended Response standard never changes: argue which side is better supported by evidence, with a clear claim, support drawn from both passages, and organized paragraphs. The strongest essays also weigh and answer the opposing argument.
'If they had left earlier, they ___ the train.' Which completes the conditional-perfect correctly -- 'would catch' or 'would have caught'?
A past hypothetical takes 'would have' + past participle: 'would have caught.'
