Every population needs resources: food, water, space, shelter, and suitable conditions. When resources are plentiful, a population can grow quickly. But no environment can support unlimited growth. The carrying capacity is the largest population an environment can support over time.

If a population rises above carrying capacity, resources become scarce. Birth rates may drop, death rates may rise, and the population may fall back. Limiting factors can be density-dependent, such as disease spreading faster in a crowded population, or density-independent, such as a wildfire affecting a population regardless of its size.

Human activity changes carrying capacity for many species. Habitat destruction removes food and shelter. Habitat fragmentation breaks large habitats into small patches, making it harder for animals to find mates or migrate. Invasive species can outcompete native species. Pollution can make water, air, or soil less suitable for life.

Conservation is the careful management of ecosystems so they keep functioning. Protected areas, habitat corridors, native plant restoration, pollution reduction, and sustainable harvest limits all work by protecting the relationships that keep ecosystems stable.
