When a pathogen enters the body, the immune system launches a layered defense.

First line of defense (physical barriers):

  • Skin — keeps most pathogens out.
  • Mucus in the nose and throat — traps particles.
  • Stomach acid — destroys many pathogens that are swallowed.

Second line of defense (non-specific immune response):
When a pathogen gets past the barriers, white blood cells called phagocytes engulf and destroy it. Inflammation — redness, swelling, warmth — is a sign this response is active.

Third line of defense (specific immune response):
This is the adaptive, "smart" layer. It targets specific pathogens.

  • Antigens — marker proteins on the surface of pathogens that the immune system recognizes as foreign.
  • B cells — produce antibodies, proteins shaped to bind exactly to one antigen. Bound antibodies flag the pathogen for destruction.
  • T cells — some directly kill infected cells (killer T cells); others coordinate the response (helper T cells).
  • Memory cells — after the infection clears, the body keeps memory B and T cells. If the same pathogen appears again, the response is much faster and stronger — this is immunity.

⚠️ Common misconception: the flu shot gives you a "weak flu." It does not — it exposes your immune system to harmless viral proteins (antigens) so memory cells can form before you ever meet the real virus.
