- Read the source first. A chart, map, or quotation usually contains the answer; check its title, labels, and date.
- Trace cause to effect. Distinguish what caused an event from what merely came before it.
- Watch the point of view. Persuasive documents take a side -- name it before judging the content.
- Apply, don't just recall. Many questions give a scenario and ask which principle it shows.
- Never leave a blank. Eliminate what you can, then choose.
