3. Strategy for Hard Items

Hard GED® questions reward a calm, written process more than speed.

• Show each step. Multi-step items (percent-then-percent, ratio-then-total) are where careless mistakes live. One line per step.
• Backsolve when you can. If the choices are numbers, plug them into the original problem -- often faster than solving a quadratic or rational equation.
• Estimate to catch calculator slips. A quick estimate flags a decimal in the wrong place.
• Watch the sign flip. Multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative reverses the direction.
• Re-read the last line. Hard problems often ask for the original price, the largest angle, or the other leg -- not the value you just computed.
• Flag and move on. Don't let one brutal question eat five minutes; guess, flag it, return later. No penalty for a wrong guess.
