Multi-Step Modeling and Answer-Choice Strategy
Hard items combine familiar skills while hiding the target. Use one routine:
- List known quantities with units.
- Circle the exact requested quantity.
- Draw a diagram, table, number line, or equation.
- Solve one labeled step at a time.
- Verify by estimation, substitution, units, or a second route.
Translate language carefully: “of” often means multiplication, “per” gives a
rate, “remaining” suggests subtraction, and “among” changes the denominator.
Answer choices are evidence. Backsolve when testing options is faster than a
symbolic solution. Eliminate by sign, units, scale, or violated conditions. A
tempting option often equals a correct intermediate value, so reread the final
sentence before selecting.

Many distractors are intermediate values rather than the requested result.

Worked example: translate before calculating
A rental company charges a fixed \(\$25\) plus \(\$0.18\) per mile. A bill is
\(\$79\). Let \(m\) be miles:
\[
25+0.18m=79,\qquad 0.18m=54,\qquad m=300.
\]
Verify forward: \(25+0.18(300)=25+54=79\). The fixed charge is not part of the
per-mile distance, so dividing 79 by 0.18 at the start would model the situation
incorrectly.
If choices are 250, 275, 300, and 325, estimation predicts roughly 300 miles
after removing the fixed charge. Backsolving 300 is then efficient and justified.
Representation ladder
Try words and units first, then a diagram or table, then an equation. If algebra
becomes messy, inspect choices or graph the relationship. Switching
representations is strategic, not a sign of failure.
Mastery practice
Take one difficult word problem and solve it twice using different
representations. Compare which method made the target, units, and verification
most visible.
In the rental example, why must the fixed charge be subtracted before dividing by the mileage rate?
The variable rate applies only to the mileage portion.
