Expert reading questions ask you to step back and see how a text works.
- Paired passages -- identify each text's main idea, the exact point they disagree on, any assumption they share, and how their tones differ.
- Irony -- when the real meaning is the opposite of the literal words, or when an outcome undercuts a character's intent.
- Symbolism -- when an object or image stands for a larger idea.
- Rhetorical strategy -- why a writer uses a rhetorical question, a contrast, or a loaded label.
