The language items now test grammar and style at their most demanding:
- Subjunctive in that-clauses -- 'The board recommends that each member submit the form' (base verb).
- Tricky agreement -- 'a number of students are' (plural) vs. 'the number of students is' (singular).
- Modifier clarity -- squinting modifiers that could attach to either side, and 'only/almost' placed precisely.
- Pronoun clarity -- a vague 'this' or 'it' must be pinned to a clear noun.
- Parallel structure and concision -- matching forms across correlatives, with no wasted words.
The Extended Response standard is constant: argue which side is better supported by evidence, with a clear claim, support drawn from both passages, and clean paragraphs.
In 'The committee recommends that he ___ present,' which verb form is correct -- is or be?
That-clauses after 'recommend' take the base form: 'that he be present.'
