Expert Social Studies is about reasoning, not recall.

  • Apply the principle. Many questions give a scenario and ask which constitutional idea it illustrates (federalism, due process, checks and balances).
  • Read primary sources. Identify the author, the date, the audience, and the point of view of a document or quotation.
  • Chains of cause and effect. Events connect -- the Civil War led to Reconstruction, which gave way to segregation, which sparked the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Two kinds of economic policy. Fiscal policy is government taxing and spending; monetary policy is the central bank managing money and interest rates.
