Westward expansion forced the nation to confront whether slavery would expand. Compromises delayed conflict but did not solve it. Lincoln's election, Southern secession, and the attack on Fort Sumter led to war. Slavery was the central cause, even though debates over states' rights and economics shaped the conflict.
