Reconstruction tried to rebuild the South and define freedom after slavery. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments abolished slavery, defined citizenship and equal protection, and protected voting rights for Black men. After federal enforcement weakened, Jim Crow laws and voter suppression limited those rights for decades.
