British colonies developed local assemblies and a habit of self-government. After the French and Indian War, Britain tried to raise revenue through taxes such as the Stamp Act and Tea Act. Colonists argued that Parliament could not tax them without representation. The conflict grew from protest to boycott to violence, then to independence.
