The early republic tested the new system. Washington set precedents, political parties formed around Hamilton and Jefferson, the Bill of Rights protected liberties, and the Louisiana Purchase doubled the nation's territory. GED® questions often focus on cause and effect: weak Articles led to the Constitution; westward expansion raised debates over power and slavery.
