Lesson 6 - Cycle 1 Review
English Grammar Level 3 - Traditional Grammar Spine · preview lesson
Welcome to Lesson 6, the first Level 3 review. You will combine the grammar from Lessons 1-5 instead of practicing each one separately.
Learning objective
By the end of this lesson, you will demonstrate Cycle 1 mastery by identifying and producing mixed Present Perfect forms and obligation/advice modals, reaching at least 80% accuracy.
1. Cycle 1 grammar map
| Skill | Key decision | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present Perfect | Life experience, no fixed time? | I have visited Bali. |
| Present Perfect vs Past Simple | Is a specific time stated? | I visited Bali in 2019. |
| For and since | Duration or starting point? | for six years / since 2018 |
| Present Perfect Continuous | Emphasize the ongoing activity? | I have been studying all day. |
| Obligation and advice | Rule, prohibition, or advice? | have to / mustn't / should |
Which tense is correct: "I ___ (finish) my homework already."
Already signals the Present Perfect with no stated specific time.
2. Mixed practice: choosing the right form
Read each pair and choose the sentence that is grammatically correct for its context.
- I have lived here since 2015. / I have lived here for 2015.
- You mustn't park here. / You haven't to park here.
- She has been working all morning. / She has been knowing the answer all morning.
- We visited Bali last year. / We have visited Bali last year.
Which sentence is correct?
Mustn't correctly expresses prohibition; "haven't to" is not a standard modal form.
3. Review of key contrasts
| Contrast | Rule |
|---|---|
| for vs since | for + length of time; since + starting point |
| mustn't vs don't have to | mustn't = forbidden; don't have to = not necessary |
| Present Perfect vs Past Simple | no specific time vs specific stated time |
| Present Perfect simple vs Continuous | result vs ongoing activity |
4. Vocabulary review
| Word | Category | Review use |
|---|---|---|
| experience | Present Perfect | I have had a lot of experience. |
| recently | Present Perfect | I have recently finished a course. |
| duration | For/since | The duration was three years. |
| obligation | Modals | It is a legal obligation. |
| prohibited | Modals | Smoking is prohibited here. |
| recommend | Modals | I recommend you should rest. |
| ongoing | Present Perfect Continuous | This is an ongoing project. |
| requirement | Modals | It is a company requirement. |
