Year 7 Mathematics: Term 1

A 48-session self-study mathematics course covering the first term of UK Key Stage 3 Year 7. Course Guide

Course Syllabus

Term 1 is organised into ten units. Unit A (sessions 1-6) builds number foundations: place value, negative numbers, and the order of operations. Unit B (7-10) covers factors, multiples and primes, including HCF and LCM. Unit C (11-17) develops fractions, decimals and percentages and the links between them. Unit D (18-21) introduces ratio, proportion and scale. Unit E (22-27) opens algebra: notation, simplifying, substituting, expanding, factorising and sequences. Unit F (28-33) solves equations and inequalities, including forming equations from word problems. Unit G (34-39) covers angle facts, polygon properties and transformations. Unit H (40-44) covers perimeter, area and an introduction to 3D shapes and volume. Unit I (45-47) covers data handling: collecting data, averages, and charts. Unit J (48) is a cumulative review and assessment session.

Learning Results

Course Outcomes

By the end of Term 1, a student can: read, write, compare and order positive and negative integers and decimals, and round numbers to a given accuracy; apply the order of operations correctly; find factors, multiples and prime factorisations, and use them to find the HCF and LCM; convert fluently between fractions, decimals and percentages; calculate percentages of amounts; simplify and use ratios and solve direct proportion problems; use correct algebraic notation, simplify, substitute, expand and factorise expressions; generate sequences and find a term-to-term or nth-term rule; solve linear equations and simple inequalities, including forming an equation from a worded problem; use angle facts in triangles, quadrilaterals and parallel lines; calculate perimeter, area and the volume of cuboids; and collect, represent and summarise data using averages and charts.
